Sultans of Swing은 발표된지 36년이 지났지만 여전히 많은 이들의 사랑을 받고 있습니다. 저 또한 대학시절 하숙집 FM 라디오를 통해 듣던 이 노래를 요즘도 즐겨듣고 있고, 또 들을 때마다 감탄하곤 합니다. '어쩜 이런 보컬과 연주를 만들어낼 수 있었을까' 하고 말입니다.

Dire straits는 1977년 영국에서 결성된 4인조 그룹입니다. 사전적 의미론 '지독한 곤경'을 뜻하는데, 이들의 초기시절이 아마 그랬을 겁니다. 주로 펍 같은 곳에서 확자지껄한 술 손님들을 상대로 연주하면서 데모 테이프 같은 걸 만들어 이곳저곳에 뿌리곤 했다는군요.

Sultans of Swing은 이들의 첫번째 싱글입니다. '노땅 뮤지션들로 구성된 밴드 이야기'를 그린 이 곡은 그러나 처음엔 큰 주목을 받지 못했습니다. 그러다 미국 워너 브러더스와 계약, 이 노래가 빌보드 차트 5위까지 오른 연후에야 영국에서도 뒤늦게 히트를 치기 시작했답니다. 이들은 Sultans of Swing이 들어 있는 데뷔 앨범 'Dire Straits'로 골드 레코드를 수상했고, 그해 최우수 신인 아티스트 부문과 최우수 록 그룹 부문 후보에까지 올랐다는군요.

전직 기자이자 교사였던 Mark Knopfler가 리더 보컬과 리드 기타 그리고 작곡까지 도맡았고, 그의 동생인 사회운동가 출신 David Knopfler가 리듬 기타를, 사회학 전공 대학생이었던 John Illsley가 베이스를, 웨일즈 출신 Pick Withers가 드럼을 담당했습니다.
